The extension board on an extension board

Plugging one multi-socket into another is common in homes, shops and offices. It is also one of the easiest fire risks to remove.

How overload happens

Each board has a limit. Heaters, irons, kettles and chargers on one chain can draw more than the wiring can carry, and the board heats up.

The warning signs

Warm plugs, a burning smell, scorch marks or flickering lights all point to overload or loose connections.

Simple fixes

One board per socket, high-power appliances plugged directly into the wall, and damaged boards replaced instead of taped.

If a plug feels warm, that is the wire asking for help.
