Toothpaste on a burn? The kitchen myth to retire

Many households reach for toothpaste, butter or ice. Cool running water for 20 minutes works far better.

Why the myths fail

Toothpaste and butter trap heat in the skin and can cause infection. Ice can damage tissue further.

Cool, gently running tap water for a full 20 minutes, even if help is on the way. Remove rings and bangles before swelling starts.

Cover, do not wrap

Lay cling film loosely over the burn, or use a clean, non-fluffy cloth. Seek medical help for burns larger than the palm, on the face, or on children.
